Rose-Coloured Glasses
2021
A group exhibition of eight Curtin BFA graduates at Pig Melon, Perth. The title and theme of this exhibition ‘Rose Coloured Glasses’ refers to an unrealistically positive attitude that fails to acknowledge issues and complexities. Artists in this exhibition drew on concepts of personal significance to question the role of selective ignorance in shaping injustices on an interpersonal and global level. Through our works, we wish to reflect our disillusionment with a culture of surface-level engagement.
My work for this exhibition titled ‘The Advocates’ aims to shed light on the conflict of interest that occurs when charities accept partnerships with pharmaceutical companies. Combining the saccharine optimism of a charity office with the stark imagery of a hospital scene, this work questions the partnerships of diabetes charities with insulin manufacturers. Currently, half of people in need of insulin worldwide are unable to access it due to cost or unavailability. The work is partially inspired by a memory from my diabetes diagnosis, where upon receiving various free items from diabetes companies I remarked ‘Mum, I think they’re trying to buy us.’
